Tree Plantings

One of our most common community greening activities is tree planting. On any given day in the spring and fall, odds are you can find one of our crews working with volunteers planting trees along our streets or streams, on school grounds, or in neighborhood parks.

Community Benefits

Trees provide a wealth of benefits to our homes and neighborhoods:

  • Cooler street and house temperatures
  • Noise reduction
  • Reduced crime
  • Improved air quality
  • Traffic calming
  • Increased real estate value

Environmental Benefits

Trees also provide a wealth of critical ecological benefits:

  • Sequestering carbon
  • Removing nutrients
  • Reducing soil erosion
  • Cooling streams
  • Reducing the greenhouse effect
  • Increasing wildlife and plant diversity

Free Trees for Local Schools:

Does your son or daughter's school campus need more shade? Are you a teacher looking for a hands-on, cost-free outdoor project? The HRWA has hundreds of Maryland-native trees for schools located in the Herring Run watershed, available for planting this spring or fall. We bring the trees, shovels and gloves; your students do the plantings and maintain the planting! Please contact Darin to discuss a school tree planting project.

Street Trees for County:

Does your neighborhood need some green? HRWA partners with community associations to green their neighborhood. We supply the trees, technical expertise, and resources. Tree stewards help to get requests and organize planting days. Neighborhoods who partner with Herring Run and get over 10 tree requests are eligible for our street tree program. Request your street tree today. Please contact Darin if you want to be your neighborhood Tree steward contact.

Street Trees for the City:

Does your neighborhood need some green? Baltimore City is accepting street tree requests from residents. You water the tree, the Forestry Department plants it. Download the Baltimore City's street tree request form to apply today. If you have concrete in front of your home or want to request trees for another location see the Forestry website to download their request form. Please contact Darin if you want to be your neighborhood Tree steward contact.

Yard Trees for neighborhoods:

Does you home need some shade or a little visual pop? Consider planting a tree this spring. There are two discount programs available to homeowners: $10 off any tree at participating nurseries through the Growing Home Campaign and 50% off shade tree program for watershed residents purchasing trees through Herring Run Natives or your Neighborhood Tree Steward. Please contact Darin if you want to be your neighborhood Tree steward contact.

Tree Planting Events

We're also constantly looking for volunteers interested in helping out with our stream, park, or school plantings. Please check our Volunteer Tab above to find an event today or sign up at our Home Page above. Please contact Darin if you want to volunteer for a tree planting event.
