Park Restoration Program Intern

Background

The Herring Run Watershed Association is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to improve the environmental and aesthetic quality of the Herring Run Watershed by conducting stewardship and education programs, and by mobilizing volunteers for monitoring, restoration and advocacy.

Job Description

This intern will assist the Watershed Restoration Assistant with the implementation of restoration projects that promote the stewardship of Herring Run Park and surrounding environs. The candidate will gain valuable experience in riparian restoration, landscape design, community organization, volunteer management, and GPS/GIS. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Working with the Department of Recreation and Parks, Parks and People Foundation, Friends of Herring Run Park and other local community organizations to plan and promote volunteer events in the Park
  • Coordinating volunteer work days
  • Assisting with GIS mapping projects
  • As needed, supporting various restoration, education, and recreation activities

The ideal candidate will have a background in natural sciences, environmental studies, education, and/or community organizing experience. An undergraduate or graduate student with demonstrated interest in environmental protection and knowledge of river ecosystems is preferred. GIS skills are helpful, but not essential. The applicant must be available to work on some weekends and evenings and must have a valid drivers license and access to a vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed).

This position may be upgraded to our Youthworks Coordinator position starting in mid-June. Coordinators would oversee and direct a crew of 6-8 high school students, age 14-16, in a variety of restoration projects, including planting and maintaining trees, canvassing for street tree requests, removing invasive species, and water monitoring. Previous experience working with youth is highly desirable for this position.

Pay is $10-15 per hour, depending upon experience. Start date and part-time hours are flexible.

Youthworks Coordinator

Background

Job Description

We are seeking 2 coordinators to oversee and direct crews of interns to maintain environmental restoration projects and conduct watershed surveys for six weeks. Coordinators are responsible for planning and achieving the weekly goals with 6 interns 14-18 years of age during the 6 week Youthworks intern program. The Coordinator will work with the Watershed Restoration Manager and Assistant to accomplish our program goals. The team ensures tree planting survival and reduces invasive plants in our parks that threaten tree survival. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Maintain over 10 acres of urban tree plantings by watering, weeding, mulching and conducting inventories
  • Remove invasive species, work at our native plant nursery, and monitor of streams
  • Lead door to door canvassing for street tree requests

Ideal candidate will have a background in natural sciences, education, or landscaping. Must be responsible, have good communication skills, have previous experience working with high school youth, and enjoy working outdoors. Familiarity with landscaping practices and experience driving a truck and trailer a plus. This is a temporary, full time position with a wage of $10.00-15.00 per hour depending on qualifications. The applicant must have a valid drivers license and access to a vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed).
